Living in Fear of Pain to Racing a Triathlon Again: Matt’s Story

Living in Fear of Pain to Racing a Triathlon Again: Matt’s Story

When people first come to work with me, they’re often feeling frustrated, exhausted and beginning to lose hope.

That was exactly where Matt found himself.

In his 40s, Matt was fit, healthy and loved being active. But persistent elbow pain had gradually started to take over his life. It was affecting his ability to work, limiting everyday activities and, perhaps most heartbreakingly, stopping him from doing what he loved most—competing in triathlons.

Despite spending over a year learning about neuroplastic pain and the powerful connection between the mind and body, he’d reached a point where progress had stalled.

As Matt describes it:

“I came to Lindsay after more than a year of discovering about neuroplastic pain and how my mind and body were linked. I had experienced great success working through one problem, but then had hit a wall. Whilst my pain had shifted and bounced around throughout this year, it was now stuck (in my elbow), and I was starting to feel like I would never find a way to get rid of it.”

One of the biggest shifts we made together wasn’t about trying harder to get rid of the pain—it was about taking the pressure off.

Together we worked on calming his nervous system, reducing self-criticism and creating a greater sense of safety within his body. Each session was tailored to what Matt needed in that moment, giving him practical tools he could continue using long after our sessions ended.

Here’s what Matt had to say about his experience:

“In my sessions with Lindsay she helped remove the pressure I was putting on myself and find new ways to calm and soothe my nervous system. I started to really look forward to beginning each video call, when her calming voice would help me relax and feel present. She gave me a new toolbox of techniques that I have been able to deploy when old habits re-surface and self-criticism starts shouting.

Overall, I really appreciated how well she understood my situation, was totally free of judgement, and tailored each session to respond to how I was feeling at that time. If I can highlight one major positive change, it is that I am no longer scared of the pain in my body that has plagued me for most of my adult life. I now understand where it comes from, and that I have the power to let it go.”

For me, this is what true healing looks like.

It’s not just about pain reducing—it’s about rebuilding trust in your body, feeling confident again and getting your life back.

I couldn’t be prouder of Matt. This Sunday he’ll be standing on the start line of another triathlon, not only with a body he trusts again, but with a newfound confidence, freedom and resilience that reaches far beyond the finish line. Watching him reclaim the life he loves has been an absolute privilege.

Could your pain be reversible too?

If you’re living with persistent pain and feel like you’ve tried everything, it may be time to look at your pain through a different lens.

If your pain is driven by an overprotective nervous system, recovery is possible.

I’d love to chat with you about what’s been happening and help you understand whether neuroplastic pain could be the missing piece of the puzzle.
