The Healing Power of Nature

I took this photo of some local bluebells whilst on a walk yesterday.
I paused for a several minutes to take in their beauty, to breathe in the fragrance that filled the air. It was a moment of peace and stillness. I could immediately feel my mind and body start to relax.
Spending just 15 minutes in nature is enough to positively impact your overall wellbeing and the best bit is that it is totally free!
The power of nature should not be underestimated, in this environment you inhale chemicals called phytoncides, these are like essentials oils given off by trees! When you breathe these in, your circulatory system responds by reducing your blood pressure , lowering your heart rate, which in turn lowers levels of cortisol, the stress hormone that causes anxiety and stress.
I often encourage clients to take time out of their busy week to spend some time in nature. Start by noticing when your stress levels are rising. How is your body responding? You might have the onset of a headache or a tight chest for example. Once you become aware of your body’s stress signals, this is the very moment to stop what you are doing, pause and take a break. Instead of pushing through and ignoring these signs.
A gentle walk of just 15 minutes can lower your stress response and calm down an agitated nervous system. This can be as simple as sitting in your garden or taking a stroll around the block or local park. Take the time to notice the nature around you. You can focus on a humble dandelion or a magnificent oak tree, the effect will be the same!
Put simply, when you feel your stress levels building, take a break, connect with nature, and return to the rest of your day feeling calmer and more resilient.
Can you dedicate time to being in nature to calm your stress response and boost your overall health and wellbeing?
